Product Overview

What Is a Bomb Calorimeter?

A bomb calorimeter is a constant-volume laboratory instrument used to determine the heat of combustion or gross calorific value of a material. A measured sample is sealed inside an oxygen-filled pressure vessel and electrically ignited.

The resulting heat is transferred to surrounding water. The measured temperature rise is used to calculate the calorific value of coal, petroleum fuels, biomass and other combustible samples.

Working Principle

How a Bomb Calorimeter Works

A controlled combustion test converts the measured temperature rise into the sample's calorific value.

1

Sample Preparation

A known mass of the test sample is placed in the crucible.

2

Oxygen Charging

The bomb is sealed and charged with oxygen for complete combustion.

3

Ignition

Electrical ignition initiates controlled combustion inside the vessel.

4

Heat Transfer

Combustion heat passes through the bomb into the surrounding water.

5

Temperature Reading

The temperature rise is measured using the instrument's temperature system.

6

Calculation

The calorific value is calculated using the calorimeter's calibration data.
